ISCC Sustainability Certification Renewal

hecQuality, Chemical industry, Environment

Sustainability and environmental protection are a priority in our manufacturing processes, achieved through continuous research and investment, as well as the meticulous daily adherence to sustainable work procedures implemented over the past forty years. Thus, thanks to our commitment to the environment In 2024, we achieved certification under the prestigious ISCC standard – International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, Sustainability certification awarded by the prestigious Italian company RINA. This certification demonstrates our commitment to environmental matters beyond mere compliance with existing regulations.

ISCC certification confirms that the raw materials we process and the products we market for biofuel applications meet the requirements of the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II/III) in sustainability and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

A portion of the fats we produce is used to manufacture biodiesel. For this biodiesel to count as renewable energy in the European energy mix, it must be traceable back to a sustainable feedstock—typically byproducts and waste from the olive oil sector—with a verifiable reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to the reference fossil fuel. ISCC audits every link in the chain: harvesting, storage, manufacturing, and transport. Our certifying body, RINA (Italy), verifies our mass balances, traceability documentation, and emissions calculations. For our energy sector clients, ISCC is not a voluntary badge but a regulatory requirement: without valid ISCC certification at every stage of the chain, the final biodiesel cannot be recognized as renewable in European national registers. We are committed to renewing this certification annually without interruption, ensuring a continuous supply to a sector where any traceability failure propagates backward to all the suppliers that feed it.

FEDER funds help from the European Union

hecNews

RIOSA-Refinación Industrial Oleícola SA has received aid from the European Union under the Operational Program ERDF of Andalusia 2014-2020, financed as part of the Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic (REACT-EU), to compensate for the extra energy cost of natural gas and/or electricity to SMEs and the self-employed especially affected by the increase in the prices of natural gas and electricity caused by the impact of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.'

Aid of this type helps to alleviate the effects of force majeure crises in companies in the Union, helping to maintain employment and reindustrialization.

RIOSA, among the 500 most thriving companies in Spain.

hecNews

The Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CEPYME) presented its yearbook on November 7 'Cepyme 500', the list that aims to give visibility and projection to the five hundred SMEs that lead business growth in Spain and that, in his 2023 edition, includes RIOSA for the first time.

To prepare this list, CEPYME observes such significant markers in the chosen companies as their billing grow to a rate greater than 15 percent annually and that the innovation is an inherent part of your company philosophy.

We make special mention of the inclusion in the same list of a neighboring company and from the same oil sector, Libitec, dedicated to the production of biodiesel. We are proud that two such close companies have been chosen within this strict national selection.

The war in Ukraine shoots up the prices of raw materials

hecNews

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent war that is developing between two of the main exporting powers of food and energy raw materials has led to an increase in food prices without comparison in recent decades. Ukrainian grain production, in what was known as "Europe's breadbasket", has practically disappeared, and Russian grain production does not reach Europe due to economic sanctions. Along with this, an equally disproportionate rise in energy caused by economic sanctions on Russian gas and oil has only made the situation worse. Food prices, already highly inflated since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, have continued to increase following the development of the sad events, putting pressure on a market, the food market, which is at the limit of consumers' possibilities. .

The EU once again authorizes the use of animal protein for animals, this time excluding intraspecies cannibalism.

hecNews, Animal nutrition

20 years after the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) crisis, also known as the "mad cow" crisis, the European Union has once again approved, after long studies, the use of animal protein in animal feed, always that certain rules are met that expressly exclude intraspecies cannibalism.

We remember here our entry about it of April 10, 2012, as well as our informational page December 1, 2003 and memorandum of May 6, 2004 of the European Commission.

In summary, from now on it will be allowed to use flour of pork origin to feed poultry, and vice versa, which will lead to better use of very useful materials that were previously lost as waste. It will also allow the use of collagen and gelatin of ruminant origin in non-ruminants. And as a novelty, the use of insect protein in poultry and pork is allowed. Previously, the use of said insect protein was only allowed for fish feeding. The prohibition on the use of proteins of bovine origin for all uses is maintained, following what was learned in the BSE crisis.
